When you’re in a happy state, you don’t want to be bothered with misery. For two reasons – 1) You’re a valium away from being back there yourself and 2) there’s so much misery, sometimes it hurts.
Fortunately somebody prays.
Folks have misfortune. And lost fortunes.
Sadness. Despair.
Heavy souls. And soul-searching.
And this is from the sane folks.
The ones who get up every morning. Put that game face on. Come to work. Do their job. Go home. Fiddle and faddle, cuz there’s always something that needs doing. Climb in the bed. Sag. Fall asleep. Then start the same day the next day, and every day. They do what they got to do to get what they got to get to take care of what they got to take care of cuz they don’t have a better choice. Sound familiar?
If you ask most of us we’re not miserable. We’re not happy, but we’re not sad. We’re just … not. And it’s our business.
We’re real good at masquerade. We tell only on a need to know basis. Folks, even some of our close friends, got big mouths. You trust the wrong person and you got two more burdens – the mess they create, and the guilt from the mess you created when you opened your mouth.
Now some folks tell your business cuz they’re evil. Mean you no good even if someone else was paying for the gift. Other folks got low self-esteem. They feel important when they know everything about everybody and can laud it over the folks who know nothing. They don’t really mean you harm, and are oh so surprised if and when you get pissed and/or things go crazy. Regardless of whether it’s from evil or stupidity, it’s still a mess you don’t need.
So we represent that we’ve got everything under control. When we don’t.
Somebody prays.
Whether through a direct communication with God, Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, whatever. Or just by wishing someone well; putting it out there in the cosmos.
Somebody prays.
It may be by someone you know.
Anyone who has attended a church service knows most have a moment of prayer. Somebody (usually the preacher) does the general get it going prayer where they ask help for those in need. Then to avoid Godly confusion, you have a moment (generally silently) to “straighten” God out on what you really need. Do we ever ask the cosmos what it wants? Selfish dogs.
Sometimes the prayor is one of those great aunts or church mothers that just seem to know from the sound of your voice that something is not right. They don’t need details. They just say, “I’m praying for you baby.” Or maybe it comes from your friends sending those onerous chain letters, not just because they’re afraid to chance the bad luck (this writer hits delete, sorry), but it gives them a chance to put good karma out there for themselves and you.
Somebody prays.
Maybe it’s a stranger who wishes blessings for the world at large. Or maybe as you walked down the street somebody just felt you needed prayer, so did it. Haven’t you done that?
Maybe your mother knows you have troubles and has the church pray for you. Of course without telling too much, it could reflect badly on the family. Personally, this is the writer’s least favorite method cuz you don’t want anybody and everybody praying for you. You don’t know what they’re saying. Either way …
Somebody prays. For all the parties.
They had to cuz we’re still holding on. Somewhere in the midst of all the pain and all the misery and that black tunnel where no light has shone in oh so long. Somewhere in the getting up and going down. Somewhere in the mind and body betrayals. Somewhere in the plaintive cries. Somewhere in that place where we feel we have no true friends and no one understands and we are literally alone even though surrounded by millions of people. Somewhere where darkness is the best part of the day cuz we can curl in our beds, cover our heads, and have peace – for one moment.
Somewhere in all this crap that can be life we hope and a small part believes that things will get better. It’s what we hold on to.
Trust this. Somebody has prayed.
Whether you believe or disbelieve. Whether agnostic or atheist. Whether you have the words or speak with your heart. Whether you believe all this prayer stuff has to do with religion and you rejected that a long time ago cuz you know better.
Trust this. Somebody has prayed and the prayers of the righteous and unrighteous have availed much.
Somebody prayed.
Whether you believe or disbelieve. Whether agnostic or atheist. Whether you have the words or speak with your heart. Whether you believe all this prayer stuff has to do with religion and you rejected that a long time ago cuz you know better.
Trust this. It works. For as crazy as things are, most of us are in our right mind and the creator of all our mess.
Whether you believe or disbelieve. Whether agnostic or atheist. Whether you have the words or speak with your heart. Whether you believe all this prayer stuff has to do with religion and you rejected that a long time ago cuz you know better.
Trust this. Don’t say you don’t believe in prayer cuz what’s the first thing you do when the plane starts going down? Uh huh. Pray.
When least expected and most needed somebody out there has paid and prayed.
So today we all pray, for those who still or need hope …
… may the bitterness you feel over what he / she did, not consume you.
… may your children and those to be grow wise and healthy and know they are loved.
… may good health bestow upon you and yorn and where not, may acceptance reign.
… may your finances be as five fishes and two loaves of bread, more than enough when you least expect.
… may the career you deserve come to fruition,
… may you be friend / family as you want them to be to you, and
… may you know and give love.
Somebody prays.
Can we do less?
